Matara Centre | Tetbury Wedding Venue
Here at Matara, we recently noticed that many of our online listings class us as being a Tetbury Wedding Venue. In fact, hitched.co.uk even mentions “nr Tetbury” within our address listing.
As people head to the Cotswolds to get married, Tetbury is fast becoming a desirable destination and Matara is a wedding venue located only five miles away from this historic Cotswold market town.
Quintessentially Cotswolds, honey-coloured limestone buildings line the bustling streets, filled with inviting cafés and restaurants, boutiques and delis, and of course, perhaps what Tetbury is most renowned for – its thriving antique scene.
Known as the southern gateway to the Cotswolds, Tetbury’s rich heritage is evident in the historic landmarks which remain throughout the town, including the Grade I listed Market House, designed for the sale of wool and yarn. With a history dating back over 1300 years, Tetbury is known as a wool town, which can be traced back to its very origins. To honour its past, every year on the last Bank Holiday Monday of May, Tetbury Woolsack Races are held, an age-old tradition that dates back to the 17th century. The idea of wool sack racing was born from drovers who would run up a steep hill with a very heavy sack of wool in a bid to impress the local ladies. Men’s sacks weigh 60lb while women’s way 35lb, and they must carry their sack above their head as they run the 240-yard course up and down Gumstool Hill, past the old weaver’s cottages, as part of a relay.
As previously mentioned, Tetbury is well-known for its plethora of antique emporiums and independent retailers. There are also regular market days throughout the week held under the Market House, check online before visiting for the latest days and times. In addition to antiques, Tetbury hosts a number of bespoke art galleries featuring local work, an eclectic mix of boutiques, jewellers and design shops, as well as a range of bakeries, butchers and delis selling fantastic fresh produce. The town has a varied scene when it comes to eating and drinking, from cafes and restaurants to some great hotels that make a convenient place to stay while attending a wedding at Matara.
Tetbury is also home to Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s country home and primary residence, Highgrove Estate. Although not open to the public, garden tours can be booked in advance online as well as numerous other events that take place at the stunning royal residence throughout the year. The Highgrove shop in Tetbury town centre sells produce from the estate as well as products endorsed by Prince Charles.
Tetbury is surrounded by beautiful rolling Cotswold countryside, so if you fancy exploring slightly further afield and making the most of the green space, then head to the National Arboretum at Westonbirt, a nature-lovers paradise boasting around 18,000 spectacular trees and shrubs. Beaufort Polo club is also just down the road, a must-visit for equine enthusiasts and those in search of a quintessential Cotswolds day out at the polo while you’re in the area.
